Green Living, Solar, HERS & Energy Star Homes
Green homes, the standard on what exactly a Green Home looks like, is not always the same for everyone. However you can now search for homes in our valley that have Solar Panels (buyer beware - see if they are owned or leased before you purchase), what the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) number is, and if the home is rated as Energy Star.
What is a HERS Index?
A certified Home Energy Rater assesses the energy efficiency of a home, assigning it a relative performance score. The lower the number, the more energy efficient the home.
The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100.
- A home with a HERS Index Score of 70 is 30% more energy efficient than a standard new home
- A home with a HERS Index Score of 130 is 30% less energy efficient than a standard new home

The ENERGY STAR Certified Homes program helps buyers easily identify homes that are significantly more energy efficient than standard construction in the marketplace. As code requirements have become more rigorous and builder practices have become more efficient, EPA has periodically modified the guidelines to ensure that certified homes represent a meaningful improvement over non-labeled homes.
